Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
A year at our school
The arts
At our school, we are committed to nurturing creativity and cultural awareness by exploring a wide range of art forms and cultural experiences. We provide students with opportunities to engage in diverse artistic activities, from visual arts and music to drama and dance, ensuring they gain a rich and varied appreciation of the arts. By attending local venues such as the Gunnedah Cultural Precinct, Forum 6 Cinemas, Tamworth among others, we also support and celebrate the vibrant cultural life of our region, giving our students meaningful experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
Bective Sports Carnivals
Although Somerton Public School is a small school, our students never miss out on the excitement and challenge of competitive sports. Each year, we join forces with other small schools in our area to participate in Athletics, Swimming, and Cross Country carnivals. This collaboration allows our students to compete in a supportive and spirited environment, making the most of the best local sporting venues specially chosen for each event.
To prepare for these competitions, our students develop their skills right here at school. Thanks to Sporting Schools funding, we hire professional coaches who provide expert guidance and training, helping our students build confidence and improve their abilities. This combination of quality coaching and community collaboration ensures that every student has the opportunity to enjoy and succeed in competitive sports.
Excursions
Our school values the enriching experiences that excursions provide, and we often collaborate with other small schools to offer larger, memorable trips to destinations such as Canberra and the Great Aussie Bush Camp. In addition to these exciting extended excursions, we regularly organise local outings to places like Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre, Green Valley Farm, Lake Keepit, as well as visits to local theatres, movies, bowling alleys, and community show days. We also participate in full-day events hosted by other small schools, which include engaging activities like science and engineering workshops, Harmony Day celebrations, maths and spelling competitions, public speaking events, and sports days. These opportunities not only enhance learning but also foster social connections and community spirit among our students.
Exciting and Educational Incursions
Our school offers a variety of engaging incursions that enrich students’ learning experiences beyond the classroom. Programs like Healthy Harold promote health and well-being in a fun and interactive way. We also welcome small band ensembles from other schools, giving our students the chance to experience live music and develop an appreciation for the arts. The Responsible Pets Program teaches valuable lessons about animal care and safety, while emergency services talks provide important information about safety and community awareness. Additionally, we regularly host visiting performers who bring creativity and culture to our school community. These incursions support our commitment to providing diverse and meaningful learning opportunities for all students.
NAIDOC Week
Each year, Somerton Public School proudly celebrates NAIDOC Week by hosting a special day of activities for students from our small schools in the area. This important day provides an opportunity to reflect on and honour the rich histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our school community comes together in a vibrant celebration, with attendance swelling to around 200 students and guests, fostering greater understanding, respect, and connection among all participants.
Celebrating Our Special Community Days: Grandparents Day, DUGS Day, and MAGS Day
At our school, we proudly celebrate the important roles of family and community through special events like Grandparents Day, DUGS Day, and MAGS Day, which include a morning tea for Grandparents and MAGS Days, and a breakfast for DUGS Day.
Grandparents Day is a special occasion to honour the love, wisdom, and support grandparents provide to our students and families. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect generations and celebrate family heritage.
DUGS Day (Dads, Uncles, Grandparents, and Special people Day) recognises the valuable contribution of these important individuals who support and guide our students. This day celebrates their positive influence and ongoing involvement in our school community.
MAGS Day (Mums, Aunts, Grandparents, and Special people Day) celebrates the nurturing and supportive roles of mothers, aunts, grandparents, and other special people in our students’ lives. It’s a day to acknowledge their care, encouragement, and the strength they bring to our community.
Together, these days create meaningful opportunities to honour the special people who enrich our students’ lives and help build a strong, inclusive, and caring school environment.
